What Exactly Is Biomass?
Biomass is simply anything that is produced which is derived from a natural growing process. For example, wood that is grown and cultivated in the forest is actually the largest source of biomass. In a natural setting, as the branches fall off of the trees and begin to decompose, this goes back into the ground and is used as nutrients through the roots of the trees, helping them to grow. From a domestic viewpoint, this could be guard clippings from mowing your yard, raking the leaves, or trimming your bushes. One of the primary focuses that people have for producing energy with biomass is looking into crops that are grown, specifically crops like wheat and corn. This could also be done by properly harvesting the forest, not doing clearcutting, and if clearcutting is done that all of the branches and leaves that are produced during this process could be shipped to a factory where it could be in some way converted into a form of fossil fuel. Until this becomes much more economical, and also profitable for the investors, it remains to be seen if this will become a sustainable industry that will and our dependency on foreign sources of gas and oil.
